Leighton Tebay Canadian Certified Counsellor

What I bring to therapy:

I’m a husband, father and step-father.   I’m naturally very open, curious and enjoy being with people.  Unpretentious, caring and genuine.  People have always mattered to me

I helped raise a child diagnosed with Autism, ADHD and an Anxiety Disorder.  I learned a lot of hard lessons being a father to such a challenging child.  I’ve supported another person close to me that has struggled with Complex PTSD.   I’ve had to do my own inner work to get to a place where I can thrive again.  Before I became a professional I have had the joy and opportunity to support a number of other people who have been abused, and walk with others as they navigated life’s twists and turns.

These experiences molded me. I learned that to help others it is best to be calm,  to have great compassion and patience for people.  I stopped believing that people do well if they want to and began to recognize that people do well if they can.  They are just sometimes so burdened or so overwhelmed by their situation that they can’t.  I leaned that people often know the answers to their problems, they are just too burdened to see them or have the confidence to tackle them.

I’m positive and hopeful.  I see great capacity in people and really like cheering for them.  I see such resilience and beauty in people.  I see it in the people who have been mistreated and I see it in those who have mistreated others.  Because of this I think everyone matters no matter what they have been through or what they have done.  I’m very happy to take on clients who have done things they regret and want to be the best they can be moving forward.  While many have little hope for themselves, I’m always willing to lend them my hope to get them through.

There is nothing good about shame or condemnation.  My goal is to heal, not to judge.

I love being a counsellor.   Helping people leave the wounds behind and see their own incredible value is pretty much the best thing to do in the world.

I enjoy good food, good friends and relaxing at the lake.  I grew up awkward, and quite honestly I’m a bit of a nerd.  I love technology, science fiction, and meaningful conversations.
